Habitat Volunteers Raise Funds for Water in Oudong

Active Habitat volunteers in their home town of Adelaide, Australia, Barry and Pam Hughes joined a Global Village volunteer team to try their hand at building houses in Cambodia last December. During their Cambodia volunteer experience, they visited the New Life Community and met with community members. Inspired by the community, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes decided to make a donation and raise funds to install a well and water pump on the New Life Community land earmarked for income generation activities. The Hughes were able to raise US $1,400 for the well, including a contribution by a craft group from the Golden Grove Baptist Church near Adelaide.

New Life Community leader Chea Chandy is excited about the new well, and the community plans to use the water to grow vegetables (for the families to consume and also to sell in the market), as well as for raising animals such as chickens and ducks, which will also generate income for the community.

The well was drilled and the water was tested. After receiving positive results on the water test, concrete was poured and the water pump installed. The community is now able to use this safe water for both the village as well as their farmland.

Barry Hughes is staying busy with Habitat in Adelaide- his group just completed construction on four new houses and is starting three more!
