Enhancing HIV/OVC Programs with Holistic Housing Solutions
Habitat for Humanity Cambodia’s Enhancing HIV/OVC Programs with Holistic Housing Solutions Program will bring secure housing to 320 orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) and those affected by HIV/AIDS in Cambodia. HFH Cambodia is partnering with four local and international NGOs currently running successful programs for OVC and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Cambodia- Khemara, Save the Children Australia, Sharing Experience for Adapted Development (SEAD) and Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE. This program will complement and enhance these on-going programs by providing land, houses, and undertaking house repairs for their beneficiaries so that they will have safe, decent homes to live.
This two-year, US $1,220,710.00 pilot project, $900,000.00 of which is funded by Habitat for Humanity Great Britain with a grant from the Elton John AIDS Foundation, will build a total of 120 new houses, as well as repair/ rehabilitate 200 homes.
The target locations are communities around the capital, Phnom Penh, and Prey Veng.
The project will also increase livelihood opportunities by training family members in construction skills and by providing micro-credit loans.
“Habitat can now take its activities in Cambodia to a whole new level by targeting this highly vulnerable group of people, thanks to the Foundation’s generous support. This project – the first Habitat project in Cambodia to support some of the country’s most economically and socially marginalized people to fulfill the great human need of housing – will add an extra dimension to our collective fight against poverty housing,” said Rick Hathaway, Asia-Pacific vice president for Habitat for Humanity International.
